Everyone’s hometown has certain things that make it unique, forming a special bond between the citizens and their community. While it is easy to view the place you live as uninteresting, nothing as special as the last place you went for vacation, if you take the time to think about what makes your area unique, you will find so much to be thankful for.
Appreciating the area I live in has never been something I considered before. I have always viewed it more as a place I am stuck rather than a place to enjoy.
It was not until I stopped to think about what makes the small part of the country I call home unique that I began to realize how many things I would miss if I were to move far away and start over.
One of my goals for 2025 is to spotlight a different spot that makes my community special. It may be a business, a park, or a place that is just special for being itself.
Each one of these places are part of the fabric that makes my little section of Ohio, home.
The first of these spots is the Mexican Restaurant on the strip in Calcutta. El Paso Mexican Grill.
When it first opened several years ago, it was in a much smaller unit that in occupies today. It did not take long until word of a new dining option had opened before it began to become the go to place for a sit-down meal.
Having a place that offered fresh, authentic Mexican food open to compete against a string of fast-food joints, it is not hard to see why it became so popular in such a short period of time.
As the years passed and staff came and went, the quality of the food has stayed consistent.
My favorite is the Creamy Chipotle Chicken Tacos. The sauce is one of the most flavorful toppings they offer.
When not enjoying this favorite, I have found the Street Tacos, Enchiladas Supreme and Grande Especial to be other favorites.
My wife usually picks between the Super Fajitas Cascadia and Burrito Azteca.
One of our favorite sides is the Chilli Relleno.
With the changing political climate, I hope that this special place is not the target of the bigotry that has taken over America. It is the shining star of the Calcutta strip.
